When Will the AI Bubble Burst?

The smell of burnt coffee sits in the newsroom. A coffee ring mars a reporter’s notebook; the hum of a cramped air conditioner keeps time. Outside, a delivery van idles and the faint scent of gasoline drifts in.

That little scene feels oddly relevant. Small, everyday things keep going while an idea—louder than most—clatters through boardrooms, trading floors, and living rooms. You can feel the momentum. You can also feel, if you squint, the pressure building.

What we’re watching now is equal parts genuine innovation and high-stakes storytelling. The machines do repetitive work well. They parse forms, summarize calls, draft first-pass emails. That’s the stuff AI handles cleanly. Yet when the tasks get thorny—medical nuance, legal judgment, or complex software architecture—the failures are not just embarrassing. They can be dangerous, expensive, and legally messy.

Why the worry is growing

Investors and executives have poured capital and rhetoric into AI. Some of that buys real capability: faster model training, better natural language responses, new discovery tools. Some of it buys narrative—an upgraded company valuation, a recruiting magnet, a headline. The two aren’t the same.

Some technologies retreat and then resurface in niche, profitable ways. AI might be the inverse: ubiquitous now, refined into disciplined, mission-critical tools later.

If you’re a worker, be skeptical but pragmatic. Learn which tasks in your job are repeatable and which rely on nuanced, contextual judgment.
